The Chinese government has announced plans to build a massive mall in the southern city of Chengdu to serve the growing middle class.
The mall is expected to have a retail space and residential area with hotels, shops and restaurants.
It will also be home to a shopping centre and a leisure park.
The plan is a departure from the more traditional shopping malls of the United States, where shoppers have long found themselves surrounded by high-end boutiques and trendy boutiques.
But it is likely to be met with skepticism by local residents, who have long complained about traffic jams, poor service and other problems at the area’s malls.
Chengdu, China The government hopes the development will help revitalise a region that has been suffering from a string of deadly traffic accidents, including a crash last year in which eight people were killed.
Chinese President Xi Jinping said the plan would be a “game-changer” and a “model for the rest of the world”.
The first phase of the mall will be the “Grand Plaza”, which is expected, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency, to include shops, restaurants and hotels, as well as a shopping mall.
A separate phase of development will be called “Grand Square”, which will have a residential area, restaurants, a hotel and hotels.
According to Xinhua, the mall “will provide a unique opportunity for the Chinese people to enjoy the rich culture of the city of Chongqing”.
In September, China announced plans for the development of the first phase, which is slated to be completed in 2021.
The development is being billed as a “new economic miracle”, but Chinese residents are sceptical.
“The mall will not be a shopping facility, but a shopping center with luxury hotels and restaurants,” Chengdu resident Li Hui told China Central Television.
Local residents are worried that the mall could be “a magnet for gangsters”, who are already active in Chengdu, according the local Xinhua report.
Xinhua says the mall is being built as part of a larger project to build hotels, restaurants for the “middle class”.
