A huge mega mall is to close in Dublin next year after its developers failed to pay the building owners €2.2m in taxes.
The Mall of Ireland (MIA) is the largest shopping mall in Europe, occupying an area the size of about 30 football fields.
But despite the massive size of the project, the developers failed in court to pay taxes in excess of €2m on the site, The Irish Daily Telegraph reported on Tuesday.
The developers had sought to have the project abandoned.
MIM founder and CEO Patrick O’Neill said he believed the development was worth around €20bn.
“I have been told by a couple of my contacts, and I have spoken to some people who have talked to me, that the amount of the tax payment was quite significant,” he said.
It is a massive amount of money.” “
It is a lot of money.
It is a massive amount of money.”
O’Connor said the developers had also failed to meet the building’s land and building approvals.
The developer’s property manager, Alan McKeown, told The Irish Sunday that he was “sorry that we did not get the full amount of taxes”.
He added that the developers will now begin negotiations with the owners.
MIP said the €2million payment was due to the owners of the mall, which was built in 2007.
Mihaly Vassilakis, chief executive of the MIM group, said the company was “extremely disappointed” and “shocked” by the failure to pay its taxes.
“MIM has been working closely with the developer to resolve all issues, and we have made the necessary changes to ensure this will not happen again,” he added.
