A Sydney mall’s iconic “cross creek” sign is set to be removed after a complaint.
Key points:The sign was erected in the late 1980s to attract customers from the south-east, which was undergoing a massive influx of immigrantsThe sign is to be moved to a different part of the mall, but some locals say it’s still thereA number of people have been unhappy with the move and say it should be replacedCommunity groups have rallied behind the sign, calling for it to remain.
“We don’t want the Cross Creek sign to be in the middle of the Cross River, it needs to go,” said Sydney-based real estate developer Tom Nairn.
“The Cross Creek is a really good example of the Sydney landscape, it’s a very beautiful area.”
The sign at the south end of the shopping mall was built in the early 1980s by the Cross Country Express.
“There was a really intense period of migration that took place, there were massive waves of people coming from south-west Asia to Sydney, which in turn attracted a lot of people to this area,” Mr Nairns said.
“This area had to be preserved, it was a huge area.”
Mr Nairson said it was an ideal place for a sign to stand.
“It’s just really a very special place, it should stay there for as long as possible,” he said.
A spokeswoman for Cross Creek said it had received “significant feedback” and would “look at the position of the sign”.
“This sign was designed to attract shoppers from the west, and we are committed to keeping it as a symbol of our Cross Creek heritage,” she said.
But the sign’s removal comes after the town council said it would look at removing it altogether, in favour of a new sign.
“With a sign that’s over 20 years old it’s got a lot more life in it, it looks very old and worn and has worn and faded over the years,” Mr Purnell said.
