A DIY mall could be a way to reduce congestion and pollution in rural Australia, according to researchers at the University of Sydney.
The mall could allow shoppers to go shopping without the need to walk through busy urban areas.

In a study of the Mall of the Future, which was designed by the Australian National University and the University’s Centre for Environment and Urban Planning (CEWP), they found that the mall’s structure could reduce CO2 emissions by 40 per of what it currently is.
In addition, the researchers found that it could reduce congestion by up 25 per cent and the pollution it produced by up 30 per cent when compared to a mall.
The Mall of Tomorrow, which opened in the Northern Territory last year, is currently operating in the town of Rockhampton, about 40 kilometres north of Darwin.

“We are really looking at how do we get people to get out of their cars and make their own decisions about where to go, what to do and how to live,” said Dr Peter Hickey, one of the lead researchers on the project.
“It’s an opportunity for people to take control and make that decision and then we can have an effect on our environment and our local economy,” he said.
The research was published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology.

The goal is to create community hubs that would serve as “local community hubs” where people can go shopping and play in public spaces.
“If we can manage to create these hubs in rural and regional areas, that could be the catalyst for this next generation mall,” Dr Kincheln said.
