Las Vegas, NV— A man who opened fire on a police officer in the middle of a downtown Las Vegas mall in Las Venegas killing has been identified as 26-year-old Stephen Paddock, a 64-year old Nevada resident who lives in the Las Vegas suburb of Mesquite, and was an avid gambler who owned several properties, according to Las Vegas police and the FBI.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are investigating the shooting.
Authorities said the officer was shot and killed while responding to the shooting around 9 p.m. local time.
According to police, Paddock fired into a crowd of people and officers, then drove to another location in the mall.
Police said he then opened fire.
No officers were wounded in the shooting and the suspect was killed by SWAT teams, Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman said.
Goodman said that Paddock’s father was a retired accountant in Las Mesquite.
He died on Wednesday in Mesquite of a heart attack, Goodman said, and his sister and brother-in-law were also found dead at the house.
The FBI is also investigating the deaths.
Officials said they were still trying to figure out why Paddock killed himself and no other suspects were in custody.
Officials also did not immediately release any further details about Paddock’s mental health.
The attack is the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history and comes less than a month after another Las Vegas gunman killed 59 people and injured more than 500 at a nightclub and hotel in Las Veres town hall meeting.
Authorities say Paddock, of Mesqueras, was killed when police surrounded him in the Mandalay Bay Hotel, where he had barricaded himself in his room.
He then began shooting at officers with an automatic weapon and a handgun as he ran from the scene, authorities said.
“This is a devastating loss to our community, our city, and our state,” said Mayor Carolyn V. Goodman, a Democrat who is running for a second term in 2018.
“It is time for us to come together to find solutions to stop this kind of violence, and we are asking everyone to join us in our efforts.”
She said she was urging the public to “stand together against this type of violence.”
Paddock’s motive for the shooting is unknown, but law enforcement officials have said that his motive was to commit a mass shooting.
Officials say Paddock used an AR-15 rifle and a high-powered rifle-type weapon to target the police officer and others as he drove into the mall parking lot, and that he used multiple firearms in the rampage.
Police believe Paddock fired from a room inside the hotel where he was staying and that his rampage began inside the building, Goodman added.
Investigators said Paddock was wearing body armor when he opened fire, and they were able to confirm he was wearing a mask.
A man with an AR 15 rifle was killed after being shot in the head by a police robot outside the hotel.
The police robot was responding to a report of shots fired inside the Mandalays Bay hotel and casino when it was struck by gunfire, police said.
Authorities also said that the man, who was wearing an armored vest, was found to be unresponsive at the scene.
Officials did not have information on how he died or what happened to him.
The officer who was killed was the city’s first officer to die in the line of duty since the Mandalayan Bay shooting in October, and the city has been grappling with the aftermath of the deadliest shooting in its history.
The shooting in Las Las Vegas was the second time this year that police have responded to a mass killing, after an officer was killed and four others were wounded when a gunman opened fire outside a popular music festival in Las Cruces, New Mexico, in early October.
The deadliest mass shootings in U.C.L.A. history were in September 2017, when a man opened fire inside a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, killing 12 people and wounding 53 others.
